[How To] Measure the Effectiveness of Data Privacy

I recently contributed my perspectives on Linkedin on the topic "How can you measure the effectiveness of data privacy controls in AI and machine learning models?".

Here are my answers to the following subtopics.

  1. Data privacy controls: To protect the security and privacy of your data, consider using a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) or Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE). Focus on building a robust access control mechanism with Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and zero trust architecture. Give users the right to access, rectify, erase, or restrict the processing of their data.

  2. Data privacy metrics: To quantitatively measure data privacy, use Differential Privacy metrics such as epsilon and delta and Information Leakage metrics such as K-anonymity, L-diversity, and T-closeness.

  3. Data privacy trade-offs: Boosted security may reduce performance and slug user experience. Thus, maintain a balance (compromise) between utility, security, and privacy.

  4. Data privacy optimization: Anonymization and pseudonymization are not enough to protect privacy. Always encrypt the stored and transmitted data and avoid collecting unused data. If possible, perform data execution under encryption. Use Differential Privacy (DP) and optimize your algorithms to perform better with noisy data.

  5. Data privacy monitoring: Invest in your Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) / Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) / Extended Detection and Response (XDR) / Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response (SOAR) infrastructure and perform regular audits. Inform impacted users of possible breaches immediately. Ensure vigorous compliance with ever-evolving legal requirements.

  6. Here's what else to consider: Consider other factors like explainability, responsibility, fairness, and security, along with compliance, performance, utility, and privacy.
